Research and Assessment Methods: The AICP Domain Most Candidates Underprepare For

At 11% of the exam, Research and Assessment Methods isn't the biggest domain, but it's consistently one of the ones candidates feel least confident about walking in. Part of that is timing: if your last formal exposure to statistics was an undergraduate methods course, this domain can feel like the furthest from your day-to-day planning work. The good news is that the exam tests a narrower, more applied slice of research methods than a stats class does, and once you know what that slice actually is, it's very learnable.

What This Domain Actually Covers

Research and Assessment Methods focuses on how planners collect, interpret, and apply data to inform decisions, not on advanced statistical theory. In practice, that means you should expect questions touching on:

Data collection methods. Knowing the difference between primary and secondary data sources, and when a planner would use a survey versus census data versus a public records request, matters more than any formula.

Basic descriptive statistics. Mean, median, mode, and understanding when each one is the more appropriate measure to use, especially in skewed datasets like income or housing cost data, where median is usually more representative than mean.

Sampling methods and bias. Random sampling, stratified sampling, and convenience sampling all show up, along with questions testing whether you can identify when a sample is likely to produce biased or unrepresentative results.

Correlation versus causation. This shows up more than almost any other single concept in this domain. Expect scenario questions where two variables move together, and you're asked whether that relationship supports a causal claim or just an observed pattern.

Forecasting and projection methods. Basic population and economic forecasting techniques, including trend extrapolation and cohort-component methods, at a conceptual level rather than requiring you to run the calculation yourself.

GIS and spatial data analysis. Conceptual familiarity with how GIS supports planning analysis, not technical GIS operation.

Evaluating research quality. Recognizing validity and reliability issues in a described study or dataset, and identifying limitations in how data was collected or applied.

Why This Domain Feels Harder Than It Is

Two things make Research and Assessment Methods feel tougher than its actual difficulty. First, it's tested through scenario-based question sets as often as any other domain, so you're not just defining "median" in isolation, you're applying it to a described planning situation, which requires a level of comfort that straight memorization doesn't build. Second, most candidates haven't used these concepts explicitly since school, even if they use the underlying judgment daily without labeling it as "research methods."

The fix for both is the same: practice with applied questions, not just definitions. Flashcards that ask "what is stratified sampling" only get you halfway there. You also need practice recognizing stratified sampling described in a two-paragraph planning scenario without the term being used explicitly.

How to Study This Domain Efficiently

Anchor concepts to planning examples, not textbook examples. Instead of learning "correlation doesn't imply causation" as an abstract statistics rule, tie it to a planning-specific version: a correlation between new transit stops and rising property values doesn't by itself prove the transit caused the increase. Concepts stick better when they're attached to the kind of scenario you'll actually see on the exam.

Don't over-invest in calculation. This domain rewards conceptual understanding far more than computation. You're unlikely to need to calculate a standard deviation by hand, but you are likely to need to recognize when a described dataset or study has a methodological flaw.

Pair this domain with Plan and Policy Development in your study schedule. Research and assessment methods feed directly into how plans and policies get justified and evaluated, so studying them close together in your schedule reinforces both.

Practice under scenario conditions. Use practice questions that embed research methods concepts inside a planning narrative rather than testing them in isolation, since that's the actual exam format you'll face.
